What is a School Council?
A school council is a representative, school building-based committee composed of the principal, parents, teachers, [and] community members… pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 71, Section 59C.The law outlines four major areas of responsibility for councils. School councils are to assist principals in:
1. Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards
2. Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school
3. Reviewing the annual school building budget
4. Formulating a school improvement plan(from: School Councils: Questions & Answers, Mass. Dept. of Education)
School Council Meetings
School Council meetings are open and any Burr parent/guardian may attend. Meeting dates and times will be posted on the school calendar.
School Council Elections
Elections for the Burr School Council are held each spring. Parent members are elected for 2 year terms. One ballot, containing brief statements from each candidate, is provided to each household (unless the election is uncontested). All Burr parents are eligible and encouraged to run.
